Various ways to say “By the way” in Chinese

另外 (lìngwài)

Translates to “in addition” or “furthermore.” It’s used to introduce new information or add to what has been previously said, with a slightly more formal tone.

e.g.

这次会议我们主要汇报一下上周的工作,另外,我们还需要讨论下一步的计划。(Zhè cì huìyì wǒmen zhǔyào huìbào yíxià shàng zhōu de gōngzuò, lìngwài, wǒmen hái xūyào tǎolùn xià yí bù de jìhuà.) In this meeting, we will mainly report on last week’s work; furthermore, we need to discuss the next steps of the plan.

我们已经完成了设计工作,另外,生产部门也已经开始准备了。(Wǒmen yǐjīng wánchéng le shèjì gōngzuò, lìngwài, shēngchǎn bùmén yě yǐjīng kāishǐ zhǔnbèi le.) We have already completed the design work, and in addition, the production department has also started preparing.

他是个好老师,另外,他还是个优秀的作家。(Tā shì gè hǎo lǎoshī, lìngwài, tā hái shì gè yōuxiù de zuòjiā.) He is a good teacher; moreover, he is also an excellent writer.

对了 (duìle)

This means “oh, right” or “by the way” and is often used to introduce a sudden reminder or a topic change that the speaker just thought of.

e.g.

对了,别忘了明天的会议开始时间提前了。(Duìle, bié wàngle míngtiān de huìyì kāishǐ shíjiān tíqián le.) Additionally, don’t forget that the start time of tomorrow’s meeting has been moved up.

你先回家吧。对了,你跟妈妈说我今天不在家吃饭。(Nǐ xiān huí jiā ba. Duì le, nǐ gēn māma shuō wǒ jīntiān bù zài jiā chīfàn.) You go home first. Oh, right, tell Mom I won’t be home for dinner today.

还有 (hái yǒu)

Literally meaning “also” or “there is also,” this phrase can function similarly to “by the way” when used to add on to previous statements with related but not directly connected information.

e.g.

我喜欢这个颜色,还有,价格也很合适。(Wǒ xǐhuān zhège yánsè, hái yǒu, jiàgé yě hěn héshì.) I like this color, and furthermore, the price is also very reasonable.

你买一点苹果,还有,别忘了买牛奶。(Nǐ mǎi yìdiǎn píngguǒ, hái yǒu, bié wàngle mǎi niúnǎi.) Buy some apples, and also, don’t forget to buy milk.

顺便说一下 (shùnbiàn shuō yíxià)

This is a direct translation of “by the way” and is used to introduce a related topic or a side note in a conversation.

e.g.

顺便说一下,明天我会迟到。(Shùnbiàn shuō yíxià, míngtiān wǒ huì chídào.) By the way, I will be late tomorrow.

我们计划周末去野餐,顺便说一下,即使下雨我们也要去。(Wǒmen jìhuà zhōumò qù yěcān, shùnbiàn shuō yíxià, jíshǐ xiàyǔ wǒmen yě yào qù.) We plan to have a picnic this weekend. By the way, we will go even if it rains.

顺带一提 (shùndài yī tí)

Similar to “顺便说一下,” this phrase means “while we’re at it” or “while I mention it” and is used to introduce additional information or remind someone of something related to the current topic. It’s also common to use 顺道一提 (shùndào yī tí).

e.g.

这家新开的餐厅很好吃,顺带一提,他家的甜点真的很不错。(Zhè jiā xīn kāi de cāntīng hěn hào chī, shùndài yī tí, tā jiā de tiándiǎn zhēn de hěn bùcuò.) This newly opened restaurant is very delicious, and while we’re on the subject, their desserts are really good.

今天的会就到这里。顺道一提,下周我出差,你们有事就发邮件给我吧。(Jīntiān de huì jiù dào zhèlǐ. Shùndào yī tí, xià zhōu wǒ chūchāi, nǐmen yǒushì jiù fā yóujiàn gěi wǒ ba.) That’s it for today’s meeting. By the way, I’ll be on a business trip next week, so if you need anything, just email me.

补充一下 (bǔchōng yíxià)

Meaning “to supplement” or “to add,” this can be used in a way similar to “by the way” to provide extra information that complements what was already said.

e.g.

补充一下,下个月我们公司将推出新产品。(Bǔchōng yíxià, xià gè yuè wǒmen gōngsī jiāng tuīchū xīn chǎnpǐn.) Just to add, our company will launch a new product next month.

补充一下,这个项目的预算还没有最终确定。(Bǔchōng yíxià, zhège xiàngmù de yùsuàn hái méiyǒu zuìzhōng dìng.) I would like to add that the budget for this project has not been finalized yet.
