Dialogue: 小熊在哪里 – Where is my little bear?

In this dialogue, Xiao Ming (小明) needs help finding his stuffed animal.

One of the more interesting characters in this passage is the word “哦” (wo). This isn’t actually a word, it’s a sound. In Chinese, because there’s no alphabet, specific characters must be used to describe certain sounds people make, like interjections “Uh huh”, exclamations “Woah!”, or the sounds of things happening, like someone eating (nom nom nom), or a gun going off (bang!). There are often certain characters reserved to describe these specific noises, and 哦 is the sound of someone saying “Oh!”. This can be a surprised “oh”, a disappointed “oh”, or an excited “oh”, but in this instance, it’s expressing disappointment.

Another character we’ve talked about before, but I’ll add a quick reminder here: the character 吧 (ba), when used at the end of a sentence, means that the sentence is a suggestion. So, in this paragraph, Xiao Ming’s mom suggests that Xiao Ming go look for his bear in the living room by saying:

去客厅看看吧。(Why don’t you go look in the living room. / How about looking in the living room.)

Without “吧”, this sentence would sound more like a command:

去客厅看看。(Go look in the living room.)
